Vegan Torta Recipe are a type of Mexican sandwich known for their sweet and savory fillings, often served on a soft roll known as a “bolillo” or “telera”. In Mexico they are popular street food, and are also found in many restaurants.
The Tortas can be completely customized to individual tastes, which is why they are delicious, filling, and perfect for a quick snack or satisfying lunch Traditionally with meats such as carne Asada, Pollo Asado , Tortas filled with carnitas and chorizo. To make this delicious sandwich vegan and vegan torta recipe, I swapped out this meat at my house for a plant-based alternative.
Alternatively, you can simply make a veggie Torta SandWich filled with beans, veggies and your favorite cheese. There’s a sandwich for everyone!
Recipe Ingredients
Vegan Carne Asada: My favorite “meat” to use on these vegan tortas is my Carne Asada made with soy curls. It mimics the taste and texture of steak and makes for a delicious hearty sandwich. If you prefer a softer style “meat” filling, make my Vegan Carnitas instead!
Refried Beans: I’ve made these sandwiches with both and and both are delicious. I highly recommend making your own beans from scratch because it’s so much more flavorful, but if needed, you can also opt for a can of store-bought beans.
Bread Rolls: Traditionally, Mexican tortas are made with a bolillo roll or telera rolls. However, unless you live near a local Mexican bakery or have a wide selection of breads at your local grocery store, you might have difficulty finding these breads. Instead, use any crusty rolls of choice. I often like to use ciabatta or a french roll.
Produce: I like to fill these sandwiches with avocado, tomato, red onion, and shredded iceberg lettuce, but use what you like.
Cilantro Lime Sauce: This creamy sauce is made with fresh cilantro, vegan sour cream, lime juice, and jalapeño. It’s the perfect creamy spread to add an explosion of flavor.

Ingredients
- 6 bread rolls
- 2 avocados sliced
- 1/2 large sliced
- 2 tomatoes sliced
- 1 1/2 cups iceberg lettuce shredded
Instructions
- Toast the rolls. Cut the torta bread in half, then toast in an air fryer or toaster until hot and golden brown.
- Spread cilantro lime sauce on one side of the bread and fresh black beans on the other side.
- Add vegan carne asada, creamy avocado, tomato slices, two onion slices, chopped iceberg, and any other toppings of your choice.
- Place the top of the bread on top, the spicy side underneath, then serve immediately hot. enjoy

The preparation time for this recipe does not include making vegan carne asada or reconstituted black beans.
